By renting out these tuktuks from locals (instead of purchasing our own fleet to utilize commercially), we give back to our community while also providing you with life-changing experiences. We believe the most authentic and best way to travel anywhere in the world is to travel like a local, and travelling like a local opens the door to many places not available by traditional or mainstream tourist routes. This allows you to embrace local culture, cuisine, and lifestyle while interacting with communities and sharing experiences.
Before you can drive a tuktuk in Sri Lanka, let us give you some background information on things you need to know! Don’t worry though, we here to guide you through the process and driving a tuktuk is actually pretty easu and straighforward!
tuktukrental.com is a social business that doesn’t own any tuktuks. In fact, we source all of our tuktuks from local tuktuk drivers who have some of the lowest salaries in Asia. We make sure everything from arrival to departure is sorted out so you only have to worry about enjoying yourself.
To date, we support around 120 families and you have contributed over $250.000 to the owners of the tuktuk!

We have insurance for all parties. This means you, your vehicle and third-party vehicle as well as people are covered by our insurance. This is standard for all vehicles and included in the rental price. Which covers damage to the vehicle, other vehicles, and other people, BUT it’s still extremely important to have your own travel insurance in case of a mishap, and especially in the event of personal injury. TukTuks aren’t commonly written on insurance papers either so we suggest you make sure you are covered for both car and motorcycle – this will prevent you running into any trouble if you need to make a claim.

Before you set off on your own, we arrange a qualified tuktuk driver to give you a one-hour driving lesson and overview of essential vehicle maintenance. We make sure you are comfortable driving a tuktuk and you are ready to hit the street like a pro!

Our Tuktuks come with comprehensive insurance which covers you for damage to your tuktuk and other vehicles. It also covers personal injury to you, your passengers, and 3rd parties (see diagram). We still recommend you have your own Travel Insurance in case of a mishap – flying you to hospital in your own country isn’t covered. Yes ! We have a number of options listed in the booking form. If your preferred drop off destination is not listed, send an email to [email protected] and we will give you a price for dropping off there. The price for dropping off outstation covers a return trip for one of our drivers to collect the vehicle and an extra day rental.
We prefer for all pickups to happen from our office in Mount Lavinia (Colombo, Sri Lanka) or Kochi (Kerala, India). This gives us the opportunity to give you a very thorough driving, maintenance and road safety lesson in the comfort of our local streets and with our extremely knowledgable full-time employees.
In some circumstances, we can make exceptions to this rule. Please send an email to [email protected] with your specific request and we will try our best to accommodate your request.
We charge more for shorter term rentals because the value proposition for our tuktuk owners isn’t as good. We pass on higher rates to our tuktuk owners for short term rentals.
Tuktuk theft is extremely rare in Sri Lanka/India. If your tuktuk does get stolen, you will be covered by our insurance policy (so long as the vehicle isn’t stolen using your set of keys).
We will ask you to cover the cost of any accessories that are lost or stolen. They aren’t worth too much, with the exception of the tuktuk keys, which cost US$75 to replace.
Yes. In line with our social business model, we need your payment to be confirmed before we can commit to renting your tuktuk from one of our incredible local suppliers.
Yes! You can pay through our secure credit card payment gateway (Stripe) or through PayPal. If you want to pay via credit card through PayPal, proceed to the PayPal payment page, then select ‘Pay by Credit Card’ down the bottom (see image below). Note: this functionality is not available in all countries.
Yes! We have a contact who can drive your tuktuk in either direction between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya while you take the famous train trip. Get in touch with us when you book to arrange this. Train tickets also book out well in advance, so make sure you get your ticket early!
