Maximizing luggage space in a tuktuk: tips and tricks

Tuktuks, also known as auto-rickshaws, three-wheels, tuk tuks, are popular modes of transportation in many parts of the world. They’re affordable, easy to navigate, and can manoeuvre through narrow streets that other vehicles can’t. However, one common issue travellers may face when using tuktuks is limited luggage space. With only a small trunk, it can be challenging to fit all of your belongings in a tuktuk, especially if you’re travelling with a group of more than 3 people or have a lot of luggage. In this article, we’ll explore some tips and tricks for maximizing luggage space in a tuktuk, so you can travel comfortably and with peace of mind.

Pack Light and Smart

Packaging light and smart is the first and most important step to maximizing luggage space in a tuktuk. Here are some tips to help you do that:

  • Make a list of the essential items you need to bring and stick to it.
  • Consider packing clothes that are versatile and can be worn in different ways.
  • Use packing cubes or compression bags to maximize space and keep your clothes organized.
  • Avoid packing unnecessary items or items that you can easily purchase at your destination.

Use Luggage That Fits the Trunk Size

When choosing luggage for your tuktuk ride, make sure to consider the trunk size. If you have a lot of luggage, consider using smaller suitcases or backpacks that can fit in the trunk. Avoid oversized or bulky luggage that may not fit, as this can be a safety hazard and may result in extra fees.

Utilize Space Under the Seats

Many tuktuks have space under the seats that can be used for storage. Take advantage of this space by packing smaller items or bags that can fit underneath. However, be mindful not to overload this area, as it can be uncomfortable for passengers and may pose a safety risk.

Roll Your Clothes Instead of Folding

Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can save significant space in your luggage. This technique also helps prevent wrinkles and makes it easier to find items quickly. Consider rolling your clothes and packing them in packing cubes or compression bags for added space-saving benefits.

Keep Valuables With You

While tuktuks are generally safe, it’s always a good idea to keep your valuables with you, such as your passport, wallet, and phone. Avoid leaving them in your luggage, as theft or loss is risky. If you have larger valuables like laptops or cameras, consider using a backpack or shoulder bag you can keep in the tuktuk while driving.

Generally, your luggage is safe in the back. Sri Lanka is a country dependent on tourism, so people generally leave tourists alone or keep an extra eye out. If you would like extra security, we recommend you bring a small lock and chain, which you can use to lock your bag onto the existing metal features inside the tuktuk. We also recommend that when you stop to explore you find a local fruit/vegetable/coconut seller and buy some of their goods in exchange for them keeping an eye on your tuktuk. Last but not least, we advise lowering the rain curtains to make accessibility to the vehicle more difficult.
